One of the biggest misconception with wooden decks is with the protection against the elements. Many decks are constructed out of pressure treated lumber. It is the most affordable and by far the most popular choice of lumber for decks and also other exterior wood structures like fences and gazebos. Pressure treated lumber is pine that is chemical treated and then sold as treated lumber or pressure treated lumber. The misconception is that this wood does not need an aftermarket wood sealer on it like Messmers or one of the many other brands. People are under the impression that because the wood it chemical treated it does not need any further protection from Mother Nature. This could not be any further from the truth and here is why. The chemical that is injected into pine to create pressure treated lumber is only to deter bugs and insects from eating it, that is it. It does not give any sun or water protection what so ever, not even a little bit. Keeping bugs from eating the wood is obviously a good thing but on top of that, the wood needs a sealer like Messmers to protect it from the elements. So after the chemical treated wood has dried out over several months and is not considered green anymore, it needs to be cleaned to remove any mill glaze that is on the surface and then sealed with a quality wood sealer like Messmers. This will ensure the wood is protected from both insects and Mother Nature so it will last for years to come.
