The way you apply TWP stain or any oil based deep penetrating stain has a lot to do with how it will perform. The first thing to remember it to not over apply the stain. It is not paint and will not act like paint. It does not form a film on top of the wood that give a consistent look. Wood stain is a sealer that dives into the wood to lock out moisture. A semi transparent sealer like TWP stain will allow the wood grain and character to show through. Once you understand this it is easier to apply just enough stain to be absorbed by the wood. Too many people slop stain on way too heavily. As they apply it the wood absorbs it so they automatically think it needs more. What happens is when a sealer like TWP stain is over applied it works against itself. Some of it is absorbed into the wood and then the top coats of the stain sit on top of the wood giving an inconsistent shiny look. The over applied layers will begin to flake off the deck normally within a year or so. This is because the TWP stain that was over applied did not fully penetrate the wood. Most of it just sat on top like a paint and wood stain is not designed that way. If you have ever stained wood trim or antique furniture you have probably applied the stain and then wiped off the excessive according to the directions. The same could be done to a deck or you just don’t over apply TWP stain to begin with.
