Once you have decided to protect your concrete with a water repellent sealer, there are a few recommendations to follow to make sure you get the most out of the product. First, follow the directions on the concrete sealer can as far as surface preparation. The surface will need to be cleaned of any mold, mildew, dirt, or other contaminant that could hinder the results of the new concrete sealer. After cleaning, there should be a specified time to allow for the concrete surface to dry before applying the sealer. Once the cement surface is ready it is time to apply the concrete sealer. Following the directions on the label is always recommended as far as the application process and the amount of coat necessary. Most concrete sealers can be applied with a roller. To speed up this process, purchase a wide roller over the typical 12″ rollers that most people use to paint with. You can get a fairly affordable 18″ roller with a pole extension at most hardware or paint stores; this will cut your application time in a third. Note that some concrete sealer brands will call for two coats. It can be beneficial to apply the first coat all in one direction and then to apply the second coat, after the recommended drying time, in the opposite directions. Rolling on concrete sealer in this cross hatch pattern will help to eliminate any roller marks and will help you to get better coverage. Just be sure you allow the right amount of drying time in between coats, normally 12-24 hours depending on the brand.
