The popularity of todays Home and Garden shows has turned even the most inexperienced do-it-yourself-er into an “expert”. These shows have made us all familiar with the vocabulary that only contractors and designers were once masters of. With this new knowledge, people have become much more particular about what they want in their homes. They can now put into words the design and style they’re looking for and quite often now, that style is modern design.

Modern design can be defined as using form and material to create innovative, trendsetting products. Many people hear the term “Modern Design” and immediately think of glass and chrome, but today’s modern pieces can be so much more than that. Dining Room Tables don’t have to be smoked glass and Coffee Tables aren’t necessarily beveled glass on chrome legs anymore.

As an example, there’s a Dining Table featured on Spacify.com that is made using Malaysian Oak construction. It’s sturdy, smooth and has a wenge finish. It’s wood but it’s very modern and space saving. Another Dining Room Table featured on this site is made from sustainable bamboo, which is 20% harder than oak and is a quick renewable resource. This shows us that modern design can be environmentally friendly. Another very interesting Dining Room Table featured on this site is called the Turtle Beach Table Set by Zuo. It has a UV frame which is protected by a synthetic weave. When the four chairs are pushed up to the table, it makes a single, space saving, modern looking block.

Coffee tables have even more versatility in the modern design arena because although they are functional pieces, they can also be designed as art pieces since one is not usually pulling a chair up to them to eat. One example of this can be seen at Spacify.com. It’s a Crosby Coffee Table which has layers and is made to rotate making different levels available. It’s hardwood construction with lacquer finish helps provide the great modern look. Other Coffee Tables made by Cabot Wrenn, EK Living, FIAM and SoHo Concepts can provide examples of great modern design.

Should you decide to redecorate with a modern, clean line style, there are plenty of options for your dining area so be sure to do your homework and choose the pieces that are right for you.
