There are different deck stains on the market and before you tackle that deck project make sure you understand something about the products first. Deck stains come in transparent, semi-transparent, semi-solid and solid stains. The transparent stain is just that, you can see the grains of wood and the wood doesn’t change color. The semi-transparent have some color and the shades are named after types of wood, like walnut, pecan, oak, etc. The semi-solid stains allow the grain of wood to show through but the names of the colors are usually actual color names, like red, brown, gray. The solid stains will not allow the wood grain to show when applied, but still allows the texture of the wood to show and it covers the wood more like painted wood, but it still is a stain product.

The best deck stains will have a UV Protection listed on the label, it will protect the wood from the damaging effects of the sunlight and keep the deck looking good longer. The average life of a deck stain can be from one to four years. Try to buy the best deck stain you can afford, it will pay off by lasting longer.

Stains can be water based or oil based. The oil is messier and requires turpentine to clean up, but it will give the wood a good penetration of oil as the stain is applied and actually will last longer. The water based stains are easier to clean with water but I don’t think they are better in the long run. There are stains that include a polyurethane coating along with the stain. I prefer not to use these types of products it makes the application harder. I would prefer to use a two step process if I were going to apply a poly coat.

All decking stains are not created equal, so read the label and follow the manufacturer’s directions regarding the application. Buy the best deck stain you can find. Ask the salesperson what they recommend and why. If you are using an oil based stain don’t forget to purchase some turpentine for clean up. Consider using disposable brushes or pads to make clean up a breeze. Invest in a good pair of gloves or have plenty of disposable ones on hand. Buy a mask to avoid breathing in vapors. Check with your local hardware store regarding rental of a pressure washer, it will save you time. If you don’t feel comfortable operating a pressure washer, then opt for using a scrub brush or broom to clean the deck or hire a professional.
