There are a few things you need to consider when it comes time to install your new drawer slides. First of all, you should look at the different models that are available. There are basically two different types of slides – undermount and side mounted. They each have their own benefits, and they can make a big difference in how the drawer actually works.
Accuride drawer slides, for example are particularly suited to work with wood products. Their breathing tabs allows for more tolerances in different wood types. Then there are the side mounted Blum drawer slides that offer a lot of different features to let your drawers open and close without banging around too much. There are some subtle but important differences between the different models and styles.
Undermount drawer slides are usually easier to install. There is one runner along the bottom that holds the drawer in place and lets it slide gently back and forth. Since there is only the single runner it is easier to get it installed correctly on the first try. Tandem or side mounted slides are a little different, though. While they are still basically simple to install, they are a little more complex than undermount, but it might be worth it for the extra load they can usually handle.
Installation can be even more complex if you are working with extendable drawer slides, but these will let you pull the drawer or shelf out far beyond the normal limit, which can make it much easier to get to the items at the far end of the drawer.
