A Pomeranian or Pom is a fluffy little dog that looks a bit like a fox. These little dogs are very popular with celebrities who carry them in handbags because they are so small. However, they are very loving and have a long healthy life expectancy. Just like any other breed of dog however, some factors are important to Pomeranian dog care. One thing to remember about these tiny dogs is that they are rather fragile because of their size. Therefore, you will have to be careful when handling them. Also, you don’t want to overfeed them because they are so tiny they really only need a tiny bit of food. Pomeranian dogs are cute, but fat Poms are not healthy!Spaying your female will help to reduce her risk of breast, ovarian and uterine infections and cancers. Neutering your male will curb aggression, prevent prostate problems and testicular cancer.Regular medical checkups are important. Checking on your dogs gums and teeth, nose, ears, eyes and skin should be done monthly at home. Keep up to speed on current viruses and use preventative measures against fleas and heart-worms.Like most small dogs, Poms are prone to tooth decay, so be sure to brush their teeth regularly. Your veterinarian will be able to suggest a good toothbrush and toothpaste. They will also be able to advise on the correct frequency for brushing your Poms teeth. You can have your dogs teeth cleaned professionally once in a while too. Also give your dog tartar control biscuits and toys.
