The seed can be in a container that is many shapes or sizes, but the top is covered with a dome-like piece. This piece does not allow the squirrel any purchase and usually they will slide right off the feeder.There is another kind that uses a weight based device. What happens is, when the squirrel climbs upon the bird feeder, the heavier weight triggers the device. When this happens, the seed is closed off from the squirrel so that it can no longer reach it.There is also a bird feeder type that is motor controlled. It allows the squirrel to slide down the feeder and land upon the bottom perch. The squirrels weight triggers the motor device which spins the bottom perch. This will send the squirrel, unharmed, flying off the feeder.You may think you have reached success when you see the squirrels unable to reach the seed and fall off the feeder. But, if you watch closely, each time the squirrel hits the feeder a bit of seed lands on the ground. The squirrel notices this also. Before long, the squirrel has enough for a full meal and will continue this method until the seed is gone.
